How to Get a Food Handlers Card in Oregon
In the state of Oregon, every food-related employee working at a state registered food facility MUST acquire a food handlers card.
This means that ALL food workers are required to complete an Oregon state-approved food safety course. After successful completion of the course, food workers will then be granted an official Oregon food handlers card. The course provider, not the state, will provide the food handlers card and/or documentation.
Successful completion of the training and examination MUST be done within 30 days from the date you start work.
How long does a food handlers card last in Oregon?
Your Oregon food handlers card is valid for three years upon issuance. This means that every three years, your food handlers card will expire and you will need to receive a new one.

The state of Oregon ONLY accepts food handler cards from specific state-approved course providers as seen on this list.
Important: All other food handler card providers β even if you have successfully completed their training and exams β are deemed unacceptable by Oregon state law.

Oregon Food Handler Course Details
The main purpose for an Oregon food safety course is to expose all food handlers to important food safety practices. The food safety course is not considered difficult, as it was crafted for beginners and is intended to give food workers basic kitchen knowledge, understanding, and awareness.
For starters, this course is different from the the food MANAGERS course. The food MANAGERS course is for supervisory and managerial employees only… and it’s not even a requirement under Oregon state law.

The process of obtaining an Oregon Food Handlers card is easier than it looks. For your convenience, we’ve shared all the steps you need to take to quickly earn your Oregon food handlers certification .
Step 1: Register for the food handlers course
Choose your course provider by selecting your County from the list on this page.
Step 2: Review Study Materials
As we stated above, the food handlers card test in Oregon is fairly easy and built for beginners. You should be able to get through the course without having to do any studying prior. If you so choose to though, this Training Manual provided by the state is a good place to start. (We’ve also added a few extra studying resources in the section below)
Step 3: Take the Test
The test was crafted to assess your understanding of essential food safety concepts. It will comprise of approximately 20 questions. A passing score is usually 75 – 80%. You can usually take the test multiple times if you do not pass the first.
Step 4: Print your Certificate, Card & Picture ID Badge
Once you have completed the test and paid the fee, you will be able to print your newly certified food handlers card.
Step 5: Provide your employer with a copy of your certificate
** Print out multiple copies of your certification or save the file to your desktop at home. This is just a safety measure, just in case you lose your original food handlers card.
How much does the Oregon Food Handlers Card Cost?
The Oregon food handlers card costs $10. Keep in mind, you will only pay the $10 fee AFTER you receive the training and take the quiz. Once you pay the $10, you’ll then have access to the food handler card printing functions.
Card Issues: Is Your Oregon Food Handlers Card Expired or Lost?
If you lost your Oregon food handlers card, simply log back into your course provider using the same username and password as before. If you cannot remember your username or password, simply contact the course provider.
Food handler permits in Oregon expire every 3 years. To renew your Oregon food handlers card, you must re-take the state-approved course all over again, pay the $10 fee, and print your renewed food handler certification!
