The Utah food handlers card is required for anyone involved in the preparation, serving, or handling of food in any capacity. This includes not only restaurants, but food trucks as well.

The State of Utah provides both online and in-person, trainer-led courses. Please be aware, there are many online outlets claiming to offer a Utah Food Handlers card. Cards issued from sources that are NOT approved from the State will not be accepted.
We understand that Utah food handlers card requirements can be a confusing process, but that is where we come in.
Below, we have covered the requirements for the major counties in Utah. We cover the following counties in this post:
- Salt Lake County
- Davis County
- Utah County
- Weber County
- Morgan County
If your county is not in this list, please contact your local county Health Department.
Keep in mind: The Utah food handlers card has a couple different names. Some call it a “certification,” while other counties call it a food handlers “permit.”
Salt Lake County food handlers permit requirements:
In Salt Lake County, anyone involved in the preparation, serving, or handling of food in any capacity MUST have a food handlers permit. This includes employees not only restaurants, but in food trucks as well.
Food handler cards are only given after attending a food handler training class approved by the Utah Department of Health.
In-person class requirements and details:
- Arrive 15 minutes early to register
- You must have a Photo ID to register
- Cost is $30 (please bring cash—most locations do not accept checks or credit/debit cards)
- Classes begin on time, and late arrivals will not be admitted
- Children are not allowed—no exceptions
- Cards are valid for 3 years from the date of issue

Replacement Cards
Replacement food handler cards are $15. To request a replacement card, or if your card never arrived, complete this online form.
Davis County Food Handlers Permit:
Davis County, Utah requires a food handlers permit for any individuals that work in facilities that prepare or serve food.
Individuals can obtain a food handlers permit after successfully completing an in-person or online state approved training course.
The permit will cost $25 regardless of online or in- person. This includes the cost of the training, the examination
In person classes (Spanish only)
Due to the increasing popularity and convenience of testing online, food handling training will no longer be available in person in English.
The Davis County Health Department offers classroom-based Food Handler Permit training in Spanish at their office in Clearfield, Utah (Information provided here).
- Taught on the first and third Friday of every month at 9am (excluding legal holidays)
- The training course and permit fee is $25. You must bring a picture ID.
- Classes fill quickly, so you should call 801-525-5120 to reserve a seat
- Cash, check, and credit/debit cards are accepted for payment
Online Classes
Davis County allows for individuals to take Food Handler Permit training online. A list of online providers is shown here (pg. 2).
After successfully completing the online course, you will be able to download and print a “Certificate of Completion” from the vendor. This certificate is temporary and in place of the actual food handler permit for a period of up to 30 days. During that period, the official food handler permit will be processed and issued by the local health jurisdiction of where you live.

- The exam will begin immediately after training.
- The exam consists of 40 multiple choice questions.
- Food handler permits are valid for three (3) years from the date of passing the exam
Utah County Food Handlers Permit
Utah County, Utah currently requires a food handlers permit for all kitchen employees handling unpackaged food products served to the general public. Individuals are able to earn a certification either online or in-person.

Like the rest of the counties in the state of Utah, individuals are able to take and pass Food Handler Permit training online from one of the online providers found on page 2 here.
In-person Classes
Utah County provides classes in both English and Spanish. Details are as follows:
English
- 1st Tuesday of every month
- 3:00- 5:30 p.m.
Spanish
- 1st Wednesday of every month
- 3:00- 5:30 p.m.

How much is the Utah County Food Handlers Permit?
A fee of $30.00 (cash only) is given at the beginning of the class.
Note: You must arrive 15 minutes early to register for the class. No one will be admitted after the class starts. (Small children will not be permitted).
Weber County Food Handlers Permit
Weber County, Utah requires that individuals pass a certified food handlers permit exam. The test is offered both online and in-person.
In-person Testing:
Location: 477 23rd Street 2nd Floor, Ogden, UT 84401
Times:
- Mondays or Fridays: 9:00am and 2:30pm
- Wednesdays: 9:00am and 3:30pm
- Second and Fourth Tuesday: 9:00am for the Spanish class
How much does the Weber County Food Handlers Permit cost?
$25 with picture ID is required on the day of class
Notes:
- Please register online or call 801-399-7160 to schedule. After registering online, please bring your payment at the Weber-Morgan Health Department on the Second Floor Room #200 the day of class
- Do not bring children with you to class.
- Arrive 10 minutes early and attend the entire 75-minute class
- Exams will be offered immediately after training.

Morgan County food handlers permit
Morgan County, Utah requires that individuals receive a food handlers permit. The exam is offered both online and in-person.
In-person Testing:
Location: 318 East 300 North, Morgan, UT 84050 (We are located inside the Northfront Business Resource Center.)
Times: Classes are held the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 10am. You must register with the Ogden Environmental Health Division first.
How much is the Morgan County Food Handlers Permit?
$25 with picture ID is required day of class. Only cash or check are accepted.

Other Requirements That May Be Helpful:
- Driver’s License and/or Passport
- Good Communication Skills
- Being able to stand long periods of time
- Non-slip kitchen shoes
- Knowledge of basic food safety
